Technology Review

As a more detailed part of the landscape review we took some of the most prevalent and likely relevant technology in the research information sector and carried out a more detailed study on it.

As part of this process, we determined some key features which appear in a number of different technologies, so that we can easily group them by category later during the implementation of phase 2.

  • author list – Provides an authority list of authors/researchers within its domain of applicability
  • citations database – Provides some citations data as an original source of content
  • grant proposals – Provides some functionality to support the preparation and submission of grant proposals
  • grants – Provides a list of grant proposals as part of its functionality as a non-original source of content
  • publications database – Provides some listing of publications as an original source of content
  • REF – Provides support for the REF
  • reporting – Provides some form of reporting capabilities
  • repository deposit – Provides some form of repository deposit/integration functionality
  • research outputs list – Provides a list of research outputs as part of its functionality as a non-original source of content
  • repository – Provides some kind of repository functionality, including support for full-text/file content of research outputs
  • standardisation – Provides agreed standards for data descriptions and for integration methodologies, to which suppliers are committed
  • discovery – Provides some form of discovery capabilities over a research information dataset

Atira Pure

Outline: Pure covers the post-award research lifecycle (with options to enter grants pre-award). It integrates with corporate systems (i.e. HR, Finance, Students, etc), provides management of research information entities (projects, grants, publications, awards, patents, etc). It also communicates with external sources such as Web of Science, Scopus, arXiv, etc, as well as services such as SHERPA RoMEO. It has a flexible internal reporting suite, and provides researcher CVs and public homepages.

Avedas Converis

Outline: Converis covers the full research lifecycle, with features to support both pre- and post-award processes. It integrates with corporate systems (i.e. HR, Finance, Students, etc), provides management of research information entities (projects, grants, publications, awards, patents, etc). It also communicates with external sources such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, etc, as well as services such as SHERPA RoMEO. It has a native reporting interface, and provides researcher CVs.

BRUCE/SolrEyes

Outline: The BRUCE project produced a process to move data from institutional systems such as SITS and HR systems into a CERIF database, and then to index that database into a search index for searching and faceting. The front end of the system then provides a basic faceted browse interface with various useful features for producing report-like outputs of the research information (i.e. as a sortable, tabular result set).

CERIF

Outline: CERIF is the most prevalent research information model. It allows the modelling of entities such as projects, people, organisational units, and supports the creation of relationships between them. It is internationalised, and the core data model is extensible so adopters can add on features that they require.

InCites

Outline: InCites is a service which provides a dataset of all publications in WoS by an institution over all time (i.e. everyone who has ever been affiliated with the institution). This data can then be reported over, with reportable artefacts such as articles and citations. It allows the outputting of tables or in some cases graphs of the resulting reports.

J-eS

Outline: J-eS is a grant funding submissions system used by a number of large funders. Users create structured documents (proposal, finance, etc), and have it validated by their institution’s research office. There is some feedback through the user interface on the status of the submission, but it is minimal.

MICE

Outline: This project investigated current requirements for systematic impact indicators and to incorporated them into both the CERIF standard itself and the CERIF4REF XML schema produced by the earlier JISC-funded Readiness for REF (R4R) project. An extension to CERIF was produced, which enables any CERIF base object to be related to an impact indicator or impact measure.

Outline: R4R was a JISC project that provided a way for institutions to collate the data needed for REF by using an ‘enhanced’ Institutional Repository. A repository ingests and disseminates data using a bespoke version of CERIF, called CERIF4REF, that was defined during the project and encompass the types of data needed for REF submissions. CERIF plug-ins for three major repository platforms were created during the project: DSpace, EPrints and Fedora Commons.

Research Fish/e-Val

Outline: e-Val is a system in use to manage research information at a number of funding bodies (including MRC). Data in e-Val is siloed to each funder in a federated architecture. It is primarily used to collect information about research projects from PIs, and does not make use of bibliographic services such as Web of Science, although UK-PMC is used as the main source of publication and citation information for the medical research areas. It provides a large number of measures of impact, including softer measures, as well as those based on publications and citations, and the analytical tools allow cross analysis of all data in the database.

RMAS

Outline: RMAS was a HEFCE-funded project running from 2011 – 2012, lead by the University of Exeter to develop research systems solutions applicable to the whole UK HEI sector. The project established a Procurement Framework, through which Universities may purchase research systems from the major UK suppliers without need for protracted procurement processes. It then developed a suite of best-practice integration techniques and freely-available tools and documentation to help institutions integrate their existing research systems together, integrate existing research systems with their corporate systems, and to integrate any new modules installed. A key development was the standardisation of terminology and semantics describing all of the data fields consumed by research systems in three institutions, indicative of the sector, and a resultant expansion of the CERIF standard and associated vocabularies.

ROS (Research Outputs System)

Outline: Based on Microsoft Zentity, this system captures a wide range of research outputs/outcomes. It is used by several RCs, who manage their own data and workflows within the system. It also connects to a variety of systems including CRISes, Repositories and CrossRef, and J-eS (periodically).

Symplectic Elements

Outline: Elements is a publications management system that allows researchers to manage the lists of their publications. It also integrates with some corporate systems (e.g. HR). Users can search for their publications in online databases, such as WoS or Scopus, and save those search parameters for automatic harvesting in future. It also supports deposit to repository, and integrates with SHERPA RoMEO. The reporting suite allows for individual/group statistics and comparative statistics
